Welcome to information web pages documenting the Rio Linda / Elverta Power Plant Project (RLEPP), for which an application has been filed with the California Energy Commission (CEC).

These pages have been prepared by Jay O'Brien, with assistance from many other Rio Linda and Elverta residents.

Currently, the Community of Rio Linda and Elverta is being taken advantage of by a company called Florida Power and Light, LLC (FPL).

FPL is attempting to build a 560 megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in our community against our wishes.

Although FPL has a very clear understanding that this community does not feel this is an appropriate site for their proposed power plant, they continue to press on as any large "merchant power plant" company would in order to satisfy their shareholders.

This is not a case of "NIMBY" (Not in my back yard), it is much worse that that.  This is actually a case where this will be in people's "front yard" and next to our children as they attend school in what they are accustomed to being a quiet, healthy, and learning friendly environment.

Fortunately for our community, CEC and Air Quality officials have temporarily suspended the review of FPL's application because FPL has been unwilling to answer the tough questions we have been asking.

FPL thinks that they will be able to cram their profitable project down our throats without having to be accountable to our community or to the CEC.

In an effort to inform the community about what is happening, a committee was formed and named STOP (Stop The Oppressive Powerplant). STOP's mission statement is as follows: "The citizens of Rio Linda / Elverta value the quality of life in our community. STOP is committed to safeguarding that quality of life and representing the community's opposition to the FPL power plant as proposed."
