Would we really have flooded as bad as we did if the new higher Sacramento Area Flood Control (SAFCA) levees had not been constructed? That's what area residents would like to know. Considering the amount of rainfall compared to the floods of 1986 and 1992, it appeared as though a lot of water was backed up in Rio Linda. Pictured is Rio Linda Boulevard looking south toward Robla. Though not the most flooded area in Rio Linda, it apparently was caused by the huge amounts of water that was backed up by the new levee system. Some homes on the south side of Elkhorn Boulevard were flooded this year from the rear even though some residents had tried to build a berm behind their homes. They say the water just backed in.

While the new pumping station was in operation to pump water out of the East Main Drain Canal, several areas in Elverta were still affected by flooding, particularly Sorento Road between Elverta Road and north toward Pleasant Grove Road. Also, ranches along the west side of the East Main Drain just south of Elverta Road. Some residents are fearful of the pending Spring run-off because of the heavy snow fall this year in the mountains. Are we really better protected now? A question that seems to remain unanswered.
