Mary Harris CRAW letter to voters
libels Rio Linda Elverta News

Mary Harris, of Mary's Hair Salon, 1020 Q Street, Rio Linda, sent a letter to Don Flesch, Editor/Publisher of the Rio Linda Elverta News, on July 23, 2001. Don didn't publish it. Mary then posted the letter as email on the Rio Linda Elverta email list on July 25.  Don referred to Harris' letter in his July 26 column. Harris then edited the letter and sent it to the Rio Linda/Elverta Registered Voters who received it on August 16, 2001. Harris' letter libels the Rio Linda News.  Click here to read the story about that letter. (updated 9/2/01)

Post Office Incident, June 29, 2001

On June 29, 2001, in violation of Federal Regulations, volunteers set up a table and chairs on the premises of the Rio Linda Post Office. The volunteers were collecting signatures for both the Grant High School District Reorganization and for the petitions to recall three Water Board members. Several confrontations were perpetrated by the volunteers. Recall Facilitator Darrell Nelson, in email sent that day, threatened "formal action" by a volunteer. Recall and Water Rate Facts

The July 5, 2001 Rio Linda Elverta News front page article, "Are you being confused about water rates and recall facts?" covers facts either omitted or misquoted when signatures have been solicited for our recall. This explains that the recall proponents have a seat on the "Rate Committee" and are examining the rate structure even before the Board of Directors. The myth about putting meters on private wells is dismissed. Click here to read.

Why a RECALL?

A special recall election will cost the RLECWD $50,000!  what good will it do for you?

Why not a REFERENDUM?

This recall is strictly a personal vendetta against us, the three Board members being recalled. If it isn't a personalization and really is the "rate issue", then why wasn't a referendum action taken rather than three recall actions? A referendum would require the collection of only 497 signatures instead of the 6021 signatures necessary to recall us. A referendum would require the Board to rescind its action or call an election; the $50,000 cost of a special recall election could be avoided. See also the editorial in the June 28 Rio Linda Elverta News.

A personal vendetta?

If this isn't "personal", then why were only two of the three who voted for the new rates targeted for recall? Why is Jay O'Brien targeted for recall when he supported the rate increase choice of recall proponents Mary Harris and Darrell Nelson? Why was Board President Doug Cater not targeted for recall, as he voted for the rates objected to by the recall proponents? If you carry or sign these petitions you are furthering a personal vendetta by Harris, Nelson and Charlea Moore against Directors Griffin, O'Brien and/or Wickham. If you carry or sign these petitions you are agreeing to impose a $50,000 expense on your Water District, which will be paid by ALL ratepayers, not just those of you who are circulating and signing the recall petitions. As a referendum petition could have been gathered with minimum cost and effort, why support an expensive recall? A recall is intended to allow the voters to remove thieves and other criminals from office. Do you agree that Mel Griffin, Jay O'Brien and Jerry Wickham are thieves or criminals? If so, where is your proof?

Darrell Nelson: facilitator

After preparing recall petitions for four members of the Grant Joint Union High School District (GJUHSD) because of their treatment of the Rio Linda High School Principal, the recall template still present on Darrell Nelson's computer was revised to target three members of the Rio Linda/Elverta Community Water District Board of Directors. Nelson now contends he was not the author of the error-filled documents, and he asserts that he didn't even make the copies he served on us at the May 14 Board meeting. He says that he was the facilitator, but he does not explain how and why a recall was chosen as the desired action. He admitted, however, on May 26 that "I have the documents on my computer"! It is indeed interesting that he had the documents on his computer on May 26, yet he didn't author or copy the documents he handed to us at the May 14th meeting. Read his many messages for more "clarification" from Mr. Nelson. Do you really want to add your signature to these error-filled documents?

Different than Grant

Unlike the action against the GJUHSD Trustees, where the notices are virtually identical and critical of those who did not support the High School Principal, the notices filed against the RLECWD Directors are personal attacks on the individual directors and are riddled with untruths and grammatical errors. Use a referendum for Grant?

Let the rate committee do its job

The citizens rate committee is working diligently to review the rate structure and recommend changes. Even though it's first Chairman, Darrell Nelson, resigned in a huff without doing his job, the committee of five is doing its best to represent you. The Board pledged its support to that committee before the recall papers were served. The committee expects to provide a recommendation to the Water Board at a Board meeting soon. Why complicate their job by muddying the waters with a recall.

Recall hurts the rate committee

Can you expect a Board, the majority threatened with recall, to respect the recommendations of a rate committee which has one of the recall proponents, Mary Harris, as a member?

WHY NOW?

Is this the time to cause this turmoil? Don't add to the problem created by this recall effort. Come to the Board meetings to observe the recall proponents and to observe your elected Board. Don't sign the petition until you have investigated both sides and until you have agreed to the $50,000 cost of the recall.
